Keratoconus Treatment Options

When a normally rounded cornea becomes cone-shaped, this is known as keratoconus. This change in the shape of your cornea can lead to blurry vision, distorted vision, and other impairments. In the advanced stages of this condition, you may experience vision loss, especially if you have scarring on your cornea. Thankfully, advancements in treatment have led to improved ways of managing this condition and protecting your vision. At Arvada Optometric Center in Arvada and Westminster, CO, our optometrist offers advanced care for keratoconus.

Scleral Lenses

When your cornea changes shape, your contact lenses may not fit correctly. Consider switching to scleral lenses if they become uncomfortable. These lenses do not rest on your cornea as other contact lenses, which makes them a more comfortable fit for those with irregularly shaped corneas.

Collagen Cross-Linking

Our optometrist can discuss other options to help reduce the risk of vision loss, such as collagen cross-linking. This treatment involves using special eye drops and ultraviolet light to stiffen your cornea. This procedure helps stop the cornea from changing shape. Our eye doctor might recommend this during the early stages of keratoconus to protect your vision from serious issues.

Surgical Procedures

Our optometrist might discuss surgical procedures if you have scarring on your corneas or other problems, such as severe corneal thinning. Corneal transplants involve replacing parts or all of your cornea with healthy tissue. Depending on your condition, this might involve replacing all or just some of your cornea. In milder cases of keratoconus, intrastromal corneal ring segments are an option. This procedure involves placing tiny synthetic rings in the cornea to flatten it and help contact lenses fit comfortably.
